Scent Work

A rewarding dog sport built around the incredible working relationship between dogs and their handlers.

AKC Scent Work mimics the task of working detection dogs as they search for a specific scent and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found.

Real-life detection dogs are trained to search for many things, including explosives, human remains, currency, contraband, and missing people. AKC Scent Work takes that remarkable partnership and turns it into a fun, accessible sport that many dogs can enjoy.

What Is Scent Work?

Dogs search for hidden target odors in different environments while the handler learns to read the dog’s body language and indication.

Why Dogs Love It

Scent Work taps into a dog’s natural ability to use their nose. It builds confidence, focus, teamwork, and mental enrichment.

Who Can Participate?

Scent Work is suitable for many breeds, ages, and experience levels. Dogs do not need to be fast or flashy — they just need to use their nose.
