AGILITY TRIALS

This weekend, January 17-19, MCKC is hosting an agility trial at Rising Star. The Club wishes all participants fast and clean runs.

Thank You, Sandy Fisher, for all of the work you have done for our club, over the years as the Trial Chairperson for these events. Sandy is Chairing her final Agility Trials for Moore County Kennel Club January 17-19.

December Board Meeting

December 2, 2024 at Sly Fox, Southern Pines

Kathy Pellerino was teaching an obedience class.  Melissa would vote for her.

Jane called the meeting to order.  Naomi read the minutes, moved and passed.  Melissa gave the Treasurer’s report, There is over $123.000 in the new Money market account.  The scent trial made over $5000.  They paid the show secretary $250/day.  Ellen accepted the treasurer’s report. It was seconded and passed.

There was no membership report since Marjorie was absent.

Agility Trials—Ellen said she did not know that Sandy quit—which she did not.

Jane made a motion to change agility trial’s secretary and chair.  Carol said that there would be no changes for January trial at Rising Star.  The new contract would start with the June trial.

Jane said that checks would be payable to MCKC within 3 days of closing—question of mailing all at one time with an attached shortened report, Owner and Dog’s name, AKC number or PAL number.

Melissa described Robin Early’s spreadsheet report.

Melissa resigned as Treasurer.  Carol said she would cover for Treasurer.

Ellen made a motion to have a 4-day Agility Trial at Rising Star in June.  Carol seconded, passed.

Jane said that a new Ag Center is opening in Asheboro.  There will be no RV hook-ups, but it is closer than Lumberton.  There is no date as to when they will open.  It was left that we would look into it.

The topic of Storage Units was discussed.  Aberdeen is $270/month.  Ellen made a motion for renting a storage unit.  It was tabled again.

The November Scent Trial went very well.

Jane said that we needed to sign the contract for the 2025 dog show and pay the deposit of $1100 for the 2026 Dog Show in Lumberton. She also mentioned the person who bounced the check for RV parking last year would not be able to show this year unless payment is made.

Kathy said she would be trial chair for the next Agility Trial.  There was discussion about holding the June Agility Trial somewhere else and renting equipment.  Ursula said she would check with Greg Fountain about renting equipment. 

Naomi made a motion to adjourn the meeting.  Carol seconded it—passed.

Jane called the meeting to order.  She introduced John Kennedy from Cumberland County Animal Services who has been helping with disaster relief for animals affected by Hurricane Helene in Western NC.  He described what they have been doing, what needs to be done, and how we can help.  He gave us names and organizations to call.  He said that Bruce Acres Veterinary Hospital is in charge of Central NC Emergency Operations Centers.

He said they have a mobile adoption unit that can be repurposed for emergencies.

Jane described what she (and MCKC) has donated so far in food purchased from Tractor Supply and taken to the airport—for the mule team and in conjunction with the Salisbury Kennel Club.

Naomi read the minutes from the October meeting.   Marjorie moved to accept as read, seconded and passed.

Marjorie then read the members’ report which included one resignation because of health and moving away.  We also discussed Ellen’s upcoming move to Nebraska which means we will need a new corresponding secretary and website master.

Naomi read the Nominations for next year’s Slate of Officers and Board members.  They are:

Marjorie read the rules concerning officers and board members.

Agility Trial—Ursula said that we need to discuss the January agility trial.  We decided to table it until the next Board meeting. 

Fast CAT will be Halloween weekend.  There were 831 runs at last Fast CAT/CAT meet plus 74 fun runs.  56 titles were given out.  Everyone had a great time.   There is going to be a different organization running the next meet.

Kathy announced there will be a FIT Walk on November 16th at Reservoir Park at 10:00.  All are invited to participate.

Ellen said that the next meeting will be the Christmas party at Valenti’s Italian Restaurant, December 4th at 6:00.  The club will pay for members’ dinners.  There will be a cash bar and there will be a $35 charge for guests’ dinners.

Marjorie requested pledges and/or donations for dog show trophies.  She said to let her know if there is a particular breed or group to which you wish to donate a trophy.

Annette Geraud of Myrtle Beach Kennel Club discussed several changes to the upcoming dog show.  She said that North Eastern Kennel Club is now up and running, and they want to do an “A” Match at the dog show.  There would be one Friday evening after our show and one Saturday evening after the Myrtle Beach Show.   Betty moved to allow North Eastern to do their ”A” Match.  Ursula seconded it and it passed.ne

There will be no charge for parking this year.  There will be a slight extra charge for entry fees. 

Jane said that we need to get more people who will be active to join the club.

Marjorie went over the contributions we made this past year and asked if anyone had suggestions for future donations

Jane asked for brags.  There were many very talented and winning dogs this month.  Congrats to all the winners.

Kathy moved that the meeting be adjourned, Ursula seconded it, passed.

Carol gave the treasurer’s report. 


Jane talked about donations of money and food that the club sent to Western NC. 


MEMBERSHIP:

Marjorie gave the membership report.  There are 66 paid members.  We discussed making Nona Burwell an honorary member and presenting her with a plaque for all of her accomplishments and generosity over the years.  This will be done at a future meeting.

Jane discussed the Vet Tech Program and said that we will have the director tell us about it.  She said hopefully we will have former recipients of the scholarship tell us what they are doing now, whether they are still vet techs and how the scholarship helped them.


CORRESPONDING:

The December Newsletter included a New Year’s ResolutionEllen asked about members’ goals for their dogs, and several members talked about what they hope to accomplish with their dogs.


AGILITY:

Carol gave a report for this coming weekend’s trial.  The trial will be at Rising Star, and Chris Tracy and Sandy Fisher will still be Trial Secretary and Chair respectively. 

Kathy will be Chair at the June trial.  She said she will need 6 people from the club to help.  Ursula said there are hotels in the area that will take dogs.


COURSING

Jane said she needs 5 members to work at the next Fast CAT meet.  She passed a sign up sheet around.  The meet is February 7, 8, and 9.


Kathy gave a report about up-coming FIT walks.  The dates are:

February 22  Reservoir Park

March 22  Pinehurst Brewery

April 19  Weymouth Preserve

May  11  Reservoir Park

June 22 Weymouth Preserve


Giselle spoke about the upcoming scent trials.  The next one will be March 29-30 at SCC.  They had the entries filled almost immediately.


Jane reminded everyone that trophy donations for the dog show need to be paid up.


New Business

Jane said that anyone who wants to be in charge of something, add your name and what you would like to do.  If you are interested in being an officer, learn what the duties are from the present officer.

An instructor for the Vet Tech program will be our speaker at the next meeting.


Ellen mentioned our May 7 meeting will be our annual pot luck picnic and have some sort of seminar with dogs(i.e. dog massage therapy)  at the same time.


Ellen made a motion that we donate $1000 to help with the fires on the  West Coast.  Kathy suggested donating through Best Friends .


Jane discussed donating $2500 to Lumberton Sheriff’s Officer for a K-9 officer.  AKC will follow-up with an additional $7500.  Carol made a motion to donate, seconded, and passed.

Jane also wants to donate a K-9 to the Southern Pines Police Department. 


Ursula made a motion to adjourn, seconded, and passed.

So Much To Celebrate!

Welcome MCKC Friends to 2025! The past year can be characterized as a lot of “NEW.”

The club has reached OVER $205,000 in charitable donations since 2010.

The club held our first Scent Work Trials – well-received by participants and so much fun.

We held our first Fast CAT and CAT Trials.

Our Dog Show, long held at the Pinehurst Harness Track, moved to the Southeastern North Carolina Agricultural Center.

A lot of new members joined us.

We started regular AKC FIT Dog Walks.

Let’s work together to make the 2025 Year the Club’s best yet.

SCENT WORK TRIAL – November 2024

What a beautiful and well organized event. As usual, the committee did our club proud. The Trials were fully sold out with a waitlist for all levels on both days.

This committee has outdone itself. The trials are held at Sandhills Community College, and from start to finish, the event is truly a class act.
